To everyone that supported the 2nd Annual SZLM Blues and Folk Festival and helped ensure that it was an absolute success, the SZLM team is thankful. We are the ones that put the wheels in motion, but it’s all of the support from each and everyone one of you, whether you’re a musician, avid music lover, bar owner and manager, roadie and/or groupie or even just a passer-by that saw something new, interesting and stayed for a beer. All of it, all of the contribution is what makes these productions possible. I work my ass off (Rue speaking) because the happiness and joy these events brings shows on each of your faces, assuring me that not only is it worth it, its also needed.

Blues is about American southern stories and people from the previous century till now. And this Blues and Folk Festival organized by Shenzhen Local Music is The Festival that belongs to South China.

Most bands/artists were Shenzhen locals – this is the very first time that it has happened since 30 years ago. Have you heard of any blues musicians before? No? Because none of them were performing! But ever since Shenzhen Local Music started the first festival, blues and folk has started to grow on Shenzhen. This year, there are authentic blues and folk bands like ShenGentlemen, Leo’s band, Flow Control, Plan B, Decaying Matters, Jordan Dotson, David Seymour (Father of Shenzhen Music), and myself, Bluesman Eric (余奕鋒) ，a Chinese musician from Shenzhen.

People say Beijing is a melting pot, Shanghai is all about Jazz. Then I say blues and rock belongs to Shenzhen.

Being young and fresh is this city’s personality. In the 5 nights of the festival, Shenzhen was a city of blues. People around the Coco Park bar street gathered there at the front line of the festival – Rapscallions, La Casa – loud, crowded, excited, dancing and singing along. Everyone was drinking, hugging, cheering for the artists that they loved. It had nothing to do with politics, nothing to do with pop music. It was a party of the freedom of the people. It was a party that belonged to the people with the best taste of music of 20 million citizens in Shenzhen!

One of the band that I was personally really impressed was one of the founders of Shenzhen Local Music Rue’s band Flow Control – extremely aggressive guitar player, fantastic rhythm riffs, plus the main vocal Rue, who’s born to perform on stage. People’s heartbeats were led by his every single move. They certainly rocked Friday night to the upsurge!

Young, rock n roll, guitar solo – this is the music that you are supposed to hear!

When asked what Tunage does, I have a lot of pre-set responses. Elevator pitches, you know. To be honest, however, despite all of the marketing and ad copy we’ve created, I don’t think I’ve described the function of Tunage better than when I originally came up with the idea…while writing my novel:

As I shouldered through the crowds, iPod buds shoved deep into my ear canals, I imagined how much better life would be if everyone walked around in a visible cocoon of digital music, a big, pixelated bubble of playlists, like a force field deflecting everyone with piss-poor taste and letting all those Ting Tings strolling within an aura of blue-eyed soul slip right into your life with an easy smile and a first conversation.

Funny, yeah? While writing a novel about a guy who’s obsessive-compulsive about music, I came up with that sequence, and only in the revision of it all did I say to myself: waitaminute…why can’t you do that?

Now, luckily for hyper muzo nerds like me and all those glorious Shenzhen Local Music folks, you can do that, and we call the app Tunage. It tells you everyone within a 10km radius who has downloaded the exact same songs on their phone as you, how many matches you have, which artists, etc. It tells that, you know, you see that cute girl at the end of the bar? Yeah, you guys have 38 of the same songs on your phone, you’re like soul mates already, so start chatting with her in the app, or better yet, go say hi you shmuck!

The funny thing is though – Tunage will probably never work in China. People here consume music much differently than they do in the West. Most people simply don’t store music on their phones here, use the iTunes store, or even carry an iPod anymore. Horrendous 3G and Wifi speeds don’t help either. But the app has been spiking to a massive degree in a few random places in the US, mostly places with really rocking indie music scenes. It seems like it’s becoming a hook-up app for concerts and music festivals, in fact. Hey – if the shoe fits.

The Next Phase of Culture in Shenzhen: the Niche

This reality belies why we were proud to sponsor the final stage of the Blues and Folk Festival though. It was fantastic seeing so many awesome musicians up there, and the scene growing into something like what our users in America enjoy. Unbridled social musical interaction. That’s what we’re all about, and why we’re happy to work with SZLM.

Overview of Session 5 of the 2nd Annual Blues and Folk Festival

Opening the final day of the 2nd Shenzhen Blues and Folk Festival was quite an odd experience for me. Primarily because it allowed me to write that sentence.

Opening. Final day. 2nd annual Shenzhen music festival say what?

Where the hell are we? How is it possible that here, of all places, entire weeks are consumed by multi-stage lineups? When did this city become a hotbed of slide guitarists from infinite countries and drummers that forgot how to miss a beat?

I’ve lived in Shenzhen for nearly a decade. The city has been many things during that time, but cool has never been one of them. Solid place to live. Easy place to get by. Fantastic place to work. But a place to listen to good tunes? No way, brother.

Finally, however, and dare I say miraculously, things are changing. If you were in attendance on Sunday, you’d walk away realizing that just between The Fred and Smiling Knives, you’ve listened fantastic musicianship worthy of any stage in the world. No hyperbole. You’d realize that percussionist Adrian Blackstock might be a cyborg (if not a high priest from the planet Funkatron). That these are long-time local musicians is kind of mind-blowing, and makes even the most critical of assholes (yours truly) aware that Shenzhen’s local musicians been polishing their groove for a long while. And it shows.

Think about that for a second. Shenzhen’s local musicians have been gigging, working, changing lineups, improving…for a very long time. That means venues willing to pay musicians. That means a reservoir of talented musicians. That means…Shenzhen has a music scene.

You might not be aware of it – heck, I’m not fully aware of it and I played the festival – but Shenzhen has a genuine, honest to goodness music scene, and as the festivities exploded to an end on Sunday, as a sweat-soaked band of thieves took the stage at La Casa for riotous impromptu jams, this reality was wholly apparent.

Shenzhen has a music scene. Shenzhen has a music scene. Repeat that to yourself a few times. Like it on Facebook. Tweet the crap out of it. Proclaim it on Weibo and let the world know that Rue Moyer and his rag-tag group of musical misfits were right. Whenever you hear someone say “Shenzhen has no culture,” tell them “No friend, you’re entirely mistaken: Shenzhen has a music scene.”

Shenzhen has a music scene. I can hardly believe believe I get to say it. And if the last week was any indication, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world figures it out.

If you weren’t at Rapscallions on Saturday night for Session 4 of the 2nd Blues and Folk Festival, then I hope waking up clear-headed and well-rested for yet another mundane work day was worth what everyone else enjoyed; en epic event in Shenzhen live music history.

7 bands, 10 nationalities, 20 musicians and nonstop music. Yeah. It was pretty awesome.

Eric Yu ― Slip Sliding Away at Session 3 of the 2013 Blues and Folk Festival

There is something that sets the slide-guitar player apart from the pack. The style is unforgiving. Get it wrong and the blues ends up sounding like a drunken jelly-roll choir. Get the notes and the ‘feel’ right, and subtle playing becomes sublime; exciting soloing slips a gear into electrifying. Bottle-neck playing can burrow into your buried emotional recesses, or fill you with joy as it teeters into mayhem—a guitar style borne from the Crossroads.

Robert Johnson, Bonnie Rait, Ry Cooder, Billy Gibbons and of course, Eric Clapton are all slide guitar aficionados. They took their inspiration from the blues and honed techniques that enabled their guitars to weep, sneer or wail like banshees. Generations of players have subsequently been influenced by their technical styles.

Eric Yu seems like an unlikely bluesman. Not someone you might pick out as having ‘sold his soul to the devil’. Understated, unassuming, he strolled towards the stage at Rapscallions during the 2^nd Blues and Folk Festival, without menace, smiling broadly as he agreed with the sound mixer, ‘if it sounds good to you, it sounds good to me.’

It’s not until he opens up his ‘blues-world’, guitar slung low on his knee, that you start to get a taste of what he is about and the depth of his ability. He is ‘old-school’. Just him, a travel weary six-string and a heartfelt affection for what he does. A man that has listened to Johnson, learned the notes but gone beyond mere replication: he brings them alive and imbibes them with his passion for the blues and a unique interpretation.

In truth I was surprised by his talent; surprised that he had such a feel for the style, and surprised that he very much brought himself into the songs, adding new contemporary twists into well trodden tunes. His repertoire includes work by legendary blues-men, Willie Dixon (Hoochie Coochie Man), and BB King (Rock me Baby), as well as the once young pretenders, The Rolling Stones (Wild Horses).

Occasionally Eric drifts off into improvised jams, seemingly detached from his surroundings. This is when he creates magic of his own, and when his free-form style shows off his versatility. He was very well received by the Blues and Folk crowd, early birds at the event that showed appreciation for this talented ex Beijinger, encouraging him to ‘encore.’

Eric Yu has earned his reputation as a skilled blues man, but he is more than just that. He has moved the genre onwards by adding his own interpretations to the spirits of the past, long may he continue.

Overview of 2nd Blues & Folk Festival Session 2 @Frankie’s

Frankie’s American bar was host to Session 2 of the 2nd annual Blues and Folk festival this past Thursday. Asahi Beer was the official stage sponsor. 100 people came out to support the music festival and enjoy the R&B style of Chicago born musician, Corey D Abrams. Corey opened the event with “Change the World” by Eric Clapton, introduced some of the 20+ bands he’s performed with over his 30+ year career and told us about his histroy in the music business. One of the highlights of the night was when he Skyped called the famous American producer Bobby Taylor. Despite some tech issues, everyone was on the edge of their seats to hear what Bobby had to say. By the end of the night, Adrian Blackstock joined Corey for some oldies and Temptation style harmonies and dance moves. Anyone in the audience can attest to the the sheer authenticity of the whole event and performances. Man, what an awesome way to keep the festival in high gear!

I sent Corey all the pictures we’ve taken of him from Thursday night after the festival. He was very happy to see the pictures and replied with a really kind letter. And he was kind enough to let me use it here. I really enjoyed reading it. I hope you do, too

Blues and Folks gets some European Influence!

Shenzhen Local Music’s 2nd Annual Blues and Folk Festival got underway on Wednesday, as Brown Sugar Jar played host on the premier night of this highly anticipated event. Acts from all walks of life are set to play an eclectic mix of sets over the 5 day extravaganza, including Hong Kong based Les Gromechkos.

Sébastien from the group was happy to chat with us about the band and their imminent performance:

“We – Les Gromechkos – are a Hong Kong-based band of French guys. The band was started 5 years ago by a couple of French and Belgian dudes who felt there was really no original bands in HK catering to their eclectic music tastes – and Les Gromechkos was born!

“Over the years, some of the original band members left, and some new ones joined; there are now 6 of us on stage : 1 bass player, 2 guitar players who are also playing flute and accordion, a keyboard player who can also amaze you with his kazoo, a drummer and a charismatic singer!

“We play original songs only, in a style of our own, or at least very “niche” : ska, rock and gipsy-punk-musette. In our songs, we try to blend all of our influences, which as you imagine can be quite wide. We also try to talk about our experiences in Hong Kong in general : the culture shock of being French and living in Asia can create interesting situations that we try to depict in our songs!”

Whilst the guys have somewhat of a following in Hong Kong, they are excited about the chance to bring their music to the Shenzhen stage. Sébastien said:

“It’s a great opportunity for us to play in front of a new crowd. We like playing in Hong Kong where we have many friends, but crossing the border and playing in Shenzhen is going to be a new experience, and we hope we won’t disappoint! We also feel very lucky to have the chance to share some of our french culture with the public in Shenzhen : how often do you get 6 crazy french guys on stage?”

Shenzhen Local Music simply could not produce the amazing events its does without the help of the community that surrounds it. Performers, volunteers and local businesses all play a part in making our festivals some of the best live music events in Shenzhen. The 2nd Annual Blues and Folk Festival is no exception, with Asahi Breweries kindly sponsoring the main stage for Session 2, Thursday night at Frankie’s American bar

Asahi Breweries are based in Tokyo, Japan and their main brand is Asahi Super Dry. In addition to this beverage, Asahi are also the proud producers of Asahi Draft Lager, Asahi Gold Lager, Asahi Stout, Asahi Z Dry Lager, and Asahi Black Lager. Many pubs, bars and venues throughout Shenzhen carry the Asahi Super Dry, including Frankie’s American Bar which is hosting Session 2 of he Blues and Folk Festival.

Asahi state on their website that they have ongoing campaigns to improve the quality of draft beer in restaurants and the freshness of products in stores. One of Shenzhen Local Music’s main goals is to bring better and better live music to Shenzhen and eventually China, so this is a perfect partnership! Coincidentally, the word “super” can be applied to both brands so why not take the opportunity to couple some new music with a new beverage this festival?

As part of their “Super” sponsorship, Asahi has provided two ice-cold kegs of Super Dry for Session1 at Frankie’s tonight. Shenzhen Local Music will be handing out 1 beer voucher to the first 80 people that come tonight. This voucher gets you an icy-cold Super Dry draft for a mere 15RMB (retailed at 35 RMB).
